#1: Playlist of 9/9/07
boysnightout – Relapsing
“but if death’s the answer, then the question is the trigger”
I guess it took me 3 years to realize what a great band BNO was. I listen to the lyrics, and realized their complexity. Nobody writes like that anymore. Their music is fun, deep and poignant. You were right all along, P. Other good songs include: A Torrid Love Affair, I Got Punched In… and Composing.
Emery – In A Win, Win Situation
“I’d take it all back to start over again.”
With their new album coming out soon, I decide to delve a bit into the past. I absolutely loved every second of their first album, The Weak’s End. The second album, The Question, kinda left me of stone. While it sounded good, all the songs kinda ran into each other. Who are the idiots who consider this the best Emery song? Have they heard “The Ponytail Parades”, “Fractions”, “Under Serious Attack”, “As Your Voice Fades”, “The Secret”…. heck, the whole first album?!
Apollo’s Child – Shh
“Cause I know they’re waiting somewhere out here…”
I hate Frou Frou (and consequently Imogen Heap). Ever since she finished Garden State every time I watched it, I just skipped the ending. She annoys the fuck out of me. How ’bout when “Hide and Seek” played every time someone got murdered? Kill me! But Moo mentioned her performing it all by herself and got curious. On YouTube you always get those “related videos” so I clicked on this “Shh” cover and got the shock of my life as the song was immediately addicting. The guy’s got a great voice, and the acoustic guitar is entrancing. Go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6QdXu-2×7Q
Britney Spears – Gimme More
“It’s Britney, bitch!”
Every time I hear this song, I am haunted by Chris Crocker who did that “Leave Britney Alone” video. And I get flashback of her performance at the VMA’s where she stumbled all over the place with her terrible extensions. I just cannot take this song seriously.
Metric – Grow Up And Blow Away
“If this is the life, why does it feel so good to die today?”
I got to see Metric this week, finally! And Emily Haines is great. I never got a chance to really get into Metric, but now I’m putting in my best effort and I’m surprised “Grow Up And Blow Away” got shelved by the band itself, because although it dates from 8 years ago, it sounds very timeless and if I’d have heard this album before the their two latter efforts, I would’ve loved Metric a lot earlier.
Evan Rachel Wood – It Won’t Be Long
“It won’t be long, yeah, till I belong to you”
Since “Across The Universe” came out this week, I went and downloaded the soundtrack to prep for it. To my disappointment, “Girl” wasn’t included (come on!) and since I hate the Beatles (but always loved Beatles covers) I tried to make it through this album, but got bored mostly. While ERW isn’t an amazing singer, she can hold quite a note and makes me anticipate the movie a lot more, yeah!
Chiodos – A Letter To Janelle
“We make the sun shine, we make a morning… move with me”
With my decision of going to more shows, I noticed Emery was coming back and opening for Chiodos who I’ve heard of but never listened to. I gave them a spin and was pleasantly surprised as the music is light and rock-y without being too whiny or emo. They also get props for putting variation in their album. While I wasn’t too hooked, when I heard this song I was sold. I, then, proceeded to hunt down lyrics on Google and ended up on SongMeanings where a user wrote something very poignant:
“i think this song is about a relationship where a guy knows he’s being played and just acts stupid about it. also, i think it’s saying that you can make yourself believe whatever you want about a person. like, if you build them up in your mind how you want them to be, you’ll believe it if you want to. he’s not being true to himself because he’s putting up a front of “not knowing” what’s really going on.”
I don’t know how they got that out of the song, but that’s in there to interpret I’m ready to fall in love with this band.
[edit]: I couldn’t quite put my finger on it before, but he sounds like Anthony Green (but better than Cover Reber ever could).
Flyleaf – I’m So Sick
“We can push out, sell out, die out.”
I don’t know how I haven’t managed to get sick of this song yet. I was all over the acoustic session before, but this song is pretty amazing all on its own. The guitar starts with its distortion, Lacey sings in her angelic voice and then screams, the guitar and bass kicks in as she scream “break” over and over… man, what a great song.
And thus ends my Playlist of the week.
